Vitamin D May Speed Up Weight Loss

When you’re trying to lose weight, you hear plenty about eating right and getting exercise. Those are both important, of course, but there’s more to it than that. Hormones and nutrition can play a major role in how much weight you lose or even whether you lose any weight at all. Now, new research finds vitamin D – which is both a vitamin and a hormone – can help speed weight loss. A dose of 25,000 IU per month, or just 833 IU per day, triples weight loss, helping patients lose 8 pounds over six months versus 2.6 pounds among those in a control group. A higher dose of 100,000 IU per month, or more than 3,300 IU per day, helps dieters lose nearly 12 pounds in that same timeframe. Dieters also lost more inches off the waistline and had better blood sugar control, according to the study presented at the European Congress on Obesity. Whether you’re looking to lose weight or not, you probably could use a vitamin D supplement. I recommend between 2,000 IU and 5,000 IU per day, but your doctor can help you figure out exactly how much you need and the best way to get it.
