VIDEO: What Nutrients Do Statin Drugs Deplete?

Host: Now let's talk a bit about the statin drugs. What nutrients do statin drugs deplete?

Dr. Stengler: We know studies have shown that statin drugs, used to reduce cholesterol, commonly deplete people of coenzyme Q10 — they can deplete your levels by thirty or thirty-five percent. So we always recommend for people on statin drugs, if you're going to stay on them, at least 100 to 200 milligrams of coenzyme Q10 a day. Why? Because you need this nutrient for energy production, not just in your muscle cells and for general energy, but also for your heart — it helps keep blood pressure down and the heart functions better with coenzyme Q10. Number two is vitamin D: recent research has shown the statin drugs can deplete you of vitamin D, so you need to supplement vitamin D if you're on any of the statin medications, to prevent a vitamin D deficiency, which is so common already.

Statin drugs to reduce cholesterol commonly deplete your body of Coenzyme Q10, which is a nutrient that your body needs for energy production, not just for muscles and general alertness, but your heart as well. They can also rob you of Vitamin D, which you need for a healthy immune system, as well as preventing and controlling inflammation, and even for weight loss. We typically recommend daily supplements of both of these for patients who need to stay on those statin drugs. If you're on prescription medication for cholesterol and feel like your own energy levels are low, please make an appointment at the Stengler Center for Integrated Medicine!
