VIDEO: Heavy Metal Toxicity and Memory Loss

Dr. Stengler: One of the root causes of poor memory can be heavy metal toxicity — especially mercury and lead. In the previous generation, it was not uncommon for people to be exposed to lead: lead in gasoline, lead in paint, lead in old pipes. That can be a problem. And then mercury — from fish, from old fillings in the mouth, from vaccines. Studies do show that mercury damages brain cells and interferes with memory. There is testing your doctor can do to see if your levels are elevated, and if so, there are treatments called chelation therapy — done in different ways — to bring those metal levels down. We often do find that patients' memory improves once we address that.

Mercury and lead exposure or ingestion have been shown to damage brain cells and cause memory loss.
