The Silent Symptoms of LEAKY GUT: Watch Out for These 7 WARNING SIGNS

Dr. Stengler: You've heard of leaky gut — but do you know the seven warning signs? Hi, I'm Dr. Mark Stengler, and I've been practicing integrative and functional medicine for over 30 years, treating thousands of patients with leaky gut syndrome. I also have a best-selling book called The Holistic Guide to Gut Health, where I go into the science and studies on leaky gut and what you can do to heal it naturally. But in this video, I'm going to review the seven warning signs of leaky gut. Let's go through each one and see if any of them apply to you — that can help you determine whether you likely need treatment or not.

First, a bit of background. Leaky gut syndrome is a real syndrome — it's in the medical literature. The small intestine is the gatekeeper of the body: it regulates what nutrients get absorbed into the bloodstream and keeps toxins from passing through the gut wall. With leaky gut, the lining of the small intestine becomes unhealthy — through processed foods, rancid seeds and oils, high-sugar diets, low-fiber diets, and many other components of the American diet. Medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications, acid-blocking medications for acid reflux, and steroids also lead to breakdown of the gut. And stress reduces digestive function and blood flow to the gut, predisposing people to leaky gut as well.

Now let's go over the seven warning signs.

Warning sign number one: fatigue after eating, or unexplained fatigue. With leaky gut, you have inefficient digestion. You waste a lot of energy trying to break food down without properly absorbing the nutrients, and your blood sugar levels become unstable. Fatigue after eating is definitely a sign of leaky gut. And if you have chronic fatigue — weeks or months of unexplained fatigue — that could also be related to leaky gut syndrome.

Warning sign number two: gas and bloating, even on a strict diet. If you're prone to gas and bloating, those are warning signs that something isn't right in your gut. When you don't have proper absorption and you have an imbalance in the microbiome of the small intestine, you're going to produce a lot of gas. Many people with leaky gut also have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth — an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine that shouldn't be there, which ferments carbohydrates and creates gas and bloating.

Warning sign number three: multiple food sensitivities. If you've been developing more and more food sensitivities over time, that is a true tell-tale sign of leaky gut. Most of your immune system is actually located in the small intestine — in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue. When you have inflammation there and aren't breaking foods down properly, larger food particles reach the immune system, which identifies them as foreign and triggers reactions. I've had many patients over the years with very restricted diets due to food sensitivities, and as we treat their leaky gut, they're able to expand their diet over time — which means more variety and more nutrients.

Warning sign number four: diagnosis with an autoimmune disease. There are many studies now showing a clear link between leaky gut syndrome and autoimmunity. When the small intestine is disturbed, the immune system becomes imbalanced and dysregulated — reacting to undigested food particles it shouldn't be exposed to. There's also a well-established process called translocation, where bacterial byproducts are absorbed into the bloodstream and travel to different parts of the body — the joints, muscles, brain — triggering inflammatory immune reactions. That is what's driving autoimmunity.

Warning sign number five: unexplained skin rashes, breakouts, or rapid skin aging. There is a well-documented gut-skin axis — an unhealthy gut leads to unhealthy skin. If you're not absorbing nutrients properly, you can't neutralize free radicals, which leads to skin aging. Leaky gut also creates metabolic toxins that enter the bloodstream and trigger inflammatory responses in the skin. You may also be deficient in key skin nutrients like vitamins A, D, E, and C, and omega fatty acids, due to malabsorption.

Warning sign number six: brain fog and worsening cognitive function. The literature is very clear that there is a gut-brain axis, and it's bidirectional. Signals travel from the gut to the brain and from the brain to the gut via the vagus nerve and hormonal signals. If you have imbalances in the gut such as leaky gut, it leads to brain fog, poor memory, and poor focus. If you're having cognitive difficulties, you need to be suspicious that something is going on in your gut.

Warning sign number seven: inflammation of the muscles, joints, and bones. As I mentioned earlier, translocation — the absorption of bacterial byproducts into the bloodstream — allows those byproducts to travel to your muscles, joints, and bones, triggering immune-driven inflammatory reactions. This results not just in inflammation, but in pain, soreness, and a reduced ability to recover after physical activity.

The good news about all of these warning signs is that there's something you can do about it. When you change your diet, you can see very dramatic improvements in leaky gut and whole-body health in a matter of days. Most people can notice dramatic differences within 7 to 14 days. Getting the right prebiotic and probiotic foods, enough fiber, and nutrients like glutamine, quercetin, aloe vera extract, and DGL licorice extract — which I cover in other videos — can accelerate healing of the gut.

I hope you found this video helpful. Leaky gut is a very common problem in our society, and you cannot have good health if you have leaky gut syndrome. Check out my other videos on this topic on my YouTube channel.
