Dr. Angela Stengler: Hi, I'm Dr. Angela Stengler, here with Dr. Mark Stengler, and it's time for our One Minute Clinical Insight segment. Today we're talking about the thyroid and metabolism.
Dr. Stengler: Yes. The thyroid gland, which resides in your neck, is a butterfly-shaped organ right below your Adam's apple. It's so important because it produces your thyroid hormones, and the thyroid hormones really are what control the energy and metabolism in your cells. We find a lot of patients either have low thyroid function based on tests, or they have a sluggish, suboptimal thyroid, and as a result they're suffering from weight problems.
Dr. Angela Stengler: A couple of things we do: number one, we always do a full thyroid panel that includes the antibodies, because if you do have antibodies attacking the thyroid gland, you have a higher chance of becoming hypothyroid in the future. Herbs such as ashwagandha are very helpful, and we do check iodine — either blood or urine — to make sure you have enough iodine to help with that thyroid hormone production.
