VIDEO: Cardiovascular Disease and the Super Food Pomegranate Juice

Dr. Stengler: Hi, I'm Dr. Mark Stengler from the Stengler Center for Integrative Medicine. Today I want to talk to you about cardiovascular disease and the superfood pomegranate juice. Most people have seen pomegranate juice in the supermarket, but did you know it has tremendous effects on your arteries and your cardiovascular risk? Pomegranate juice is very rich in substances called polyphenols. They're anti-inflammatory, they prevent your cholesterol from being damaged, and they improve circulation.

I want to talk to you about a very interesting study done in Israel. In this three-year study of people with carotid artery plaque, the participants received only 1.7 ounces, or 50 milliliters, of pomegranate juice daily. What researchers found among the juice drinkers is that plaque thickness in the carotid arteries decreased an average of 13% in the first three months and 35% after one year. As well, their systolic blood pressure was reduced. Those who did not drink pomegranate juice had a 9% increase in plaque thickness after one year. So something as simple as drinking a couple of ounces of pomegranate juice a day can have tremendous benefits for the health of your arteries and plaque formation.

Now, one of the downsides of pomegranate juice is that it does contain a lot of sugar. So I recommend you stay close to what the study used, which is 1.7 ounces, or let's say 2 ounces. You can take that straight or diluted in some water. I would not recommend drinking a full glass of, say, eight ounces of pomegranate juice — the sugar level is just too high. Sticking to two ounces of pomegranate juice a day can have tremendous benefits for your arteries.
