Vitamin E Can Protect Your Lungs

You don’t have to be a smoker to get a lungful of toxins with every breath – all you have to do is live in a city, by a factory, or even near a highway. All are major sources of lung-damaging pollution, and that means nearly all of us are exposed every single day. But there’s one easy way to fight back: Make sure you get adequate vitamin E. New research in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine finds a link between higher E levels and better lung function in people exposed to several types of common lung-damaging pollutants. The reason is likely due to the fact that particulate matter damages the lungs via oxidative stress, while vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that can protect against that very same damage. You can boost your intake by eating more nuts and seeds, avocado, asparagus and leafy greens such as spinach and Swiss chard – and of course you’ll find it in any decent multivitamin.
