People often ask: What is a D.O. or Osteopathic Physician? Simply put, as a fully licensed doctor, an Osteopathic Physician diagnoses the cause of one’s problem and first treats any musculoskeletal aspects of the problem before considering medication or surgery.
At an early age, Dr. LaBeau was interested in being a doctor. Having a balanced diet and regular physical activity have always been the foundations of good health for him. This lack of presence in the medical field along with the lifestyles of the average doctor that he observed almost kept him from seriously pursuing medicine. Fortunately, he found out about Osteopathic Medicine from his Aunt, Sr. Leona, a Franciscan nun with a Ph.D. in Biology.
After receiving his Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree from Des Moines University, he completed an Internship and Family Medicine residency training which gave him a broader understanding of all aspects of health care. His training then led him to receive board certifications in both Family Medicine and Musculoskeletal Medicine.
The focus of his ongoing medical education has been Integrative Medicine. This has included extensive course studies in Homeopathy, Acupuncture, and Nutritional Medicine. He finds an integrative medical approach helps him to understand whether a patient would benefit from a nutritional and structural approach alone, or whether he needs to write a prescription or possibly refer the patient to a surgeon.
His clinical experiences includes: The Back Pain & Sports Medicine Clinic – a private practice in Chicago; The Livingston Medical Center in San Diego – Medical Director providing therapy for cancer patients; and The Center for Advanced Medicine – since 2004. Academically, he has served as an Affiliated Clinical Instructor of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University. Currently, he is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Osteopathic Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences.
He has been married to his lovely wife Terri for many years and have two sons Jeffrey in college and Scott in high school. His a proud father of not one, but two Eagle Scouts.
He is in private practice at the Stengler Center for Integrative Medicine.
